who is the holy spirit?
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is one of the most transformative experiences a believer can have. Many Christians think of it as a one-time event, but it’s actually both an initial encounter and an ongoing journey. When we first receive Jesus as our Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us. That’s the start. From there, there is a second experience or baptism called being “filled” with the power of the Holy Spirit.
Imagine Jesus standing with you, teaching, comforting, and correcting. That is what the Spirit does in our lives every day. The Spirit gives clarity in moments of confusion, boldness when we feel fear, and strength when we feel weak. He also convicts us gently when we stray, nudging us toward repentance and renewed intimacy with God.
Filling with the Spirit is not passive. We participate through prayer, worship, meditation on Scripture, and obedience. It’s about opening our hearts and saying, “Lord, I want Your presence to control my thoughts, my words, and my actions.” When we do this, the Spirit begins to bear fruit in our lives—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities are not just moral ideals; they are the natural outflow of a life surrendered to God’s Spirit.
Sometimes we might ask, “How will I know I’m filled?” It’s not about feelings or flashy experiences. You’ll see it in transformation—your words, decisions, and priorities begin to align with God’s will. You’ll notice a growing sensitivity to His guidance and a desire to obey, even when it’s hard. Over time, you’ll feel empowered to step out in faith, serve others, and share your faith boldly.
Remember, being filled with the Spirit is an empowerment for a new lifestyle. It’s not something we achieve once and forget about. Luke 11:13 reminds us that God gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask. So we must continually ask, seek, and yield. Journaling, worship, fasting, and regular Bible study help maintain a Spirit-filled life, but the heart of it is surrender: “Not my will, but Yours, Lord.”
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a central experience for every believer. It is both a one-time empowerment and a continual daily process:
